Blind Q&A: Travel Technique
Q. Why do some people use a cane and others a guide dog? What are some advantages and disadvantages of both?
*Swatha N: It’s based mostly on preference. I like using a cane because I like knowing exactly what is in front of me and I like finding obstacles with it.

Conductivity: How to Fill Your Summer with Meaningful Connections
Hey Guys!
So I realize it's been so long since I've last updated my blog. ADMITTEDLY, college has been kicking my butt for the past few months, but that's all over now (at least for the time being). I am officially done with Spring 2017 classes, and I have a little more time on my hands to get things written.
Speaking of summer break, a lot of you will be heading out of your schools for the summer. That means a little over two months of free time. At a distance, this can seem excited and like you've entered paradise, but once you discover that those months are ones of emptiness and boredom, the stress can get to you. There are several tips and tricks for staving off boredom, but this post is going to focus on one: building connections.
Transitioning from an environment where your friends lived down the hall to one where you have old friends who you haven't seen in a while can be difficult. Your old friendships can easily be complicated by the time you've spent apart and the transformative nature of college life. It's easy to feel isolated because of this. That is why building connections are super useful. There are several different ways you can build connections with the people outside of your college gang. You can reconnect with old friends, meet new people in your hometown, or take the long months to focus on virtual relationships.
Reconnecting with old friends can be a daunting task, but it can be done. You'll first need to get reacquainted with them. All of you have changed, and therefore, won't think or act the same way as you did before college. Getting a firm footing and assessing whether your new personalities are compatible enough for a friendship is the first step.
Next, you need to start hanging out as often as you can. Do things that you do with your college friends, and let your old friends do the same. Do some of your old favorites as well because that will help bring back that connection.
If rekindling old friendships isn't working for you or you want to have more friends, then meeting new people in your hometown is a great way to connect. If you have a job or volunteer opportunity, network with your coworkers. Find out what they do with their free time and ask if you could tag along sometime. If you don't have a job, put yourself out there. Go to places in town where you are more likely to meet people. Strike up conversations with people on buses, trains, or in coffee stops. Rediscover your town and the people in it.
If either of these options don't cut it for you, you can have a virtual connection with someone online. This doesn't imply that you have to online date (though you certainly could if you wanted to). Plenty of people make new friends on the internet. This works best if you want to connect with someone in a different area of the country or world. First, you want to find a legitimate web site that facilitates safe online interactions. Sites and apps like Facebook and Whatsapp are good examples. Next, you want to find someone with a few things in common with you. Start out with messaging each other with photos at intermittent points throughout this interaction. Don't send them any compromising photos, also don't photoshop yourself. Just give the other person a clear picture of who you are. Once you become comfortable you can use audio or video chatting services to communicate. This friendship may or may not lead to an in-person meeting, but that doesn't devalue the human connection you have made.
So instead of flopping on the couch and groaning about how you have nothing to do and no one to do it with, work hard to connect with people. Making new friends is something that can make those long summer months speed past in a blur of fun. However, the effects are much more long-lasting. Not only is human interaction good for your personal life and mental health, but it can lead to the development of useful professional skills and even employment opportunities to better yourself in regards to your career.

Why I Love Writing
It has occurred to me that the few of you who actually read this blog only know that I'm blind, am a horrific speller, and have a strange affinity for weird Harry Potter Ships. With that troubling statement in mind, I felt that my readers should understand why my love for writing is so strong. Some people wonder why I spend day after day writing pages and pages of words that probably will never be viewed by another human being. They wonder why I waste time on going to school to write poetry and stories rather than learning a useful skills that will get me lots of money. It's quite a simple answer, really; I adore writing because it's powerful.
Looking at the summery of others' skepticism on the validity of writing, I'm sure you are quite skeptical of my claims. Writing, especially personal and fictional writing, doesn't seem to be powerful at all. It merely involves someone getting caught up in their own world and not willing to function in reality, right? Actually, no, that's totally wrong. Writing is considered an art form, and it has been argued that art shapes the way we view the world. This is the heart of why the written word is so powerful; it has the potential to alter our perceptions of the world. Our very culture is shaped by the words on a page or a computer screen. Take a look at our previous election. So must of the controversy stemmed from the rhetoric being coined by both sides of the political spectrum. Having access to interviews, speeches, and news reports helped shape everyone's perceptions of what was going on. Journalists and the candidates themselves were quite powerful in the way they were able to use their words to influence the thinking of the common people.
Though news articles and speeches are different from fantasy novels and poetry collections, they hold the same power. You can see direct parallels to the real world in any form of fictional literature. Using this imaginary space to explore real-world concepts helps shape creative ideas that can be implemented in our own lives. Books are often a safe space where children are first introduced to the world right outside their little bubble of existence. They also act as a way to see the world through a new perspective. This is powerful because their are few ways this can be done. As people grow and begin to explore the literary world using writing, they also begin to view the world through different lens by exploring the minds of their own characters.
Related to that, writing is a weapon. It's been said before that wars aren't started with guns and bombs; they're started with words. You can take a look at any battle in our recent and not-so recent history and see this holds true. Many people don't realize that the individuals who are going to have the largest effect on society are the same people you mock for "going to school to read books and write stories."
The ABCs of Being a Sucky Speller
I admit it; I've never been the best speller. During the stupid, mandatory spelling bees, I always got out on the simplest of words (like exercise and umbrella). Sadly, becoming an English major has not improved my spelling skills very much. I've learned to face the cold, hard facts; some people are just born to be terrible spellers. If this rings true for you, don't fret too much. There are a few nifty ways that you can get around your spelling curse.
1. Use spell check.
Spell check has to be the most useful tool known to mankind (at least in my opinion). It can be found in most popular word processing applications. I suggest that you use this to your advantage. Spell check your document every 10 to 15 minutes so that you can catch a lot of errors without being overwhelmed.
2. Read your work out loud.
Though I will vouch for spell check until the day I die, it iss likely that it won't catch everything. This is where reading aloud comes in. More often than not, if you hear the misspelling, you will be able to catch it and fix it. This is also helpful for resolving the related problems of misusing words or using the incorrect words.
3. Make a spelling-savvy friend.
This isn't necessarily a must-do, but it can be quite useful. Having a friend who is good at spelling and is willing to be an extra pair of eyes on your assignments can help you avoid the embarrassment of misspelling words.
4. Go old-fashioned and use a dictionary.
Yes, I'm talking about those old, dusty books at the back of the library. If you can't handle that level of retro, a quick web search or dictionary app download will also do the job. Looking up words to ensure that you are spelling them correctly not only helps with the spelling aspect, but you can also be assured that you know what the word means and that you are using it correctly. Alternatively, most voice assistants (like siri, Alexa, and Cortana) can help with the spelling and definitions of words.
5. Don't get discouraged.
Keep working at your spelling. Use the tools mentioned above to help you. Some of the greatest writers were horrible spellers, so don't let this little stumbling block deprive the world of our next Yeates or Shakespeare.
What Not to Do When Giving the Blind Directions
Ok, so I get it. Some of you sighted people are tired of seeing these dumb lists that tell you what not to do. You feel like it's either common sense stuff or we're just being over sensitive and unappreciative of your help. While some blind people can be a bit dramatic about certain things, I'm going to level with you here. These are things that you should absolutely avoid doing when giving directions or helping someone whose blind find their way. Not only will you be completely unhelpful if you do these things, but you will be the topic of discussion at the next blind convention.
1. Don't assume we need help.
Don't just walkk up to us, judge that we are lost, and start pulling us along. Always ask if we need help. If we do, we will let you know and tell you the best way to assist us. If not, don't take offense. We do appreciate that you are willing to help; we just don't need it right now.
2. Don't point and say "it's over there."
You know, this should be one of those common sense things, but sadly, it's not. Obviously, if we were able to see where "over there" was, we wouldn't have needed to ask you for help in the first place. Be specific. Give turn by turn directions and describe possible landmarks that we might encounter to help us stay on track.
3. Don't say "stay straight" when you mean "to the left, to the right, turn around three times..."
When people tell you to go straight, they often don't truly mean straight. Sometimes there's a slight curve or angle that has to be traveled. Please, communicate this clearly to us. If you tell us to go straight, we will take your directions to heart and end up in some kind of ditch or something.
4. Don't rely on colors or sizes of buildings to give directions
It's easy to say "it's the red building two doors down," or "it's that guitar-shaped building across the street." Now I won't lie, some of us may have enough vision to see what you're talking about, but don't assume that. Ask what kind of things we can see before you launch into a visual description.
5. Don't offer to help if you can't or don't want to.
We realize you may be busy, that's ok. We realize you have your own lives and situations, and that you don't always have the time to drop what you're doing and help point us in the right direction (whether that be by description or physically walking us there). However, please don't do something half way. Don't begin giving us directions and say "and hopefully by then you'll find someone to assist you." Don't walk us halfway and then leave us with the same message. That's just ignorance at its finest. If you have the time and willingness to help, please do because we truly appreciate it, but if you don't, be upfront and honest about it. This will make all of our lives way easier
There are probably a lot more "donts" that I could list, but these are some of the major ones. The biggest takeaways are to be attentive, respectful, and when in doubt, don't be afraid to ask questions.
Weirdest Harry Potter Ships Known to Mankind
Harry Potter is an amazing phennomenon that stretches the bounds of imagination. You can integrate HP into almost any aspect of normal conversation (trust me, I've done it several times). One of the most popular talking points in Potter conversations is Ships. For the non-nerd faction of society, "Ships" is a term that refers to the romantic or and/or sexual pairing of fictional characters. These Ships have titles that incorperate both of the characters' names. For example, the Hinny Ship is a relationship between Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley. However, some Ships only consist of the two characters' names separated by the letter x. An example of this is Sirius x Remus. The Ships that are not cannon (not expressly supported in the source material) are explored in fan-made media like fanfiction and fan videos. Some Ships cause a lot of outrage and controversy among fans, like Drary (Draco and Harry), Dramione (Draco and Hermione), and Harmione (Hermione and Harry) just to name a few. However, like in all things, there are Ships that break the mold of normal and acceptable. These Ships will be garunteed to get you stared down at any Pottercon. So let's dive in, shall we? Accio weird Ships!
1. Drapple:
This has to be one of the most iconic weird Ships to date. Drapple is the romantic relationship between Draco Malfoy and an apple. Yes, I mean the fruit. This has been the center of many jokes and the fodder for internet trolls. Check out this youtube video where Tom Felton addresses Drapple alongside the more conventional Ships of Drary and Dramione.
2. Vernon x Hedwigg:
This one is quite the doozie. I ran into this Ship a while ago when on a fanfiction facebook group. It's just like it sounds; the Ship details a relationship between Vernon Dursley and Harry's pet owl, Hedwigg. This one isn't PG, if you know what I mean. Don't believe me, check of The Sticky Feather from Fanfiction.net that first introduced me to this Ship wreck.
3. Hogwarts x The Giant Squid:
Yes folks, even schools have to get it on every once in a while. Buildings have needs too, and apparently the only love for Hogwarts is the Giant Squid that lives in the lake. Check out this Fanfiction.net story First Encounter.
4. Dobby x Harry:
Yes, this is a thing. Dobby the House Elf has a romantic relationship with the boy who lived himself. Who wouldn't fall in love witha green-eyed cutie who saved them from a lifetime of slavery and degradation? It's quite weird and the cringe is oh so real. This one isn't as popular as some of the others, but it still exists. Don't believe me? Check out this recently made Youtube video "If Harry Potter had facebook."
5. Hermione x Hagrid:
This is one that I just came across as I was doing the research for this blog post, though I shouldn't be too surprised that this exists. Some might cite the various sweet interactions that occur between Hermione and Hagrid throughout the books as proof that more than just friendship exists between them. Check out the Fanfiction.net story Peeping Hermione.
There are many other "weird Ships" that exist in the Potterverse. This list is by no means exhaustive. If you're a Potterhead, keep your eyes peeled for more weird Ships because you're sure to encounter them. If you're not a Potterhead, you'll still probably be confronted with these Ships.
